Shields, Scales, Shadows, and Shit - Caress Melani Journal - Session 16

 Much Sadness About Larry

(Hero Forge coming later... NaNoWriMo is a thing)

Caress looks over the shield carefully and then back towards Lyra. "This shield allows me to do, what?"

"It lets you transfer some of the pain of a blow to one of your allies."

The idea seems counter-intuitive and it was likely that the blank expression on her face betrayed that thought somewhat as the eladrin leaned forward to explain the matter a bit more clearly.

"A lot of us are in the backfields, out of the line of battle, and, not to put her under the the catapult," she glanced toward the warlock who shrugged and then let her continue. "But Ravyn is probably hardier than you are."

Caress nodded, eyes glancing down to the side as she had to agree with that assessment.

"You have almost the most protection of us, but you're also far more often in the thick of things."

"When you're not fey-stepping into the thick of it." Caress felt as if she needed to make that comment.

"Ah, but see, this is why I said you had almost the best protection of us," and she gestured toward the glasstaff. "And here's the best part of it. That magic in that shield is strong enough to further awaken the eye, so you just transfer the eye to the Shield of the Craven and there you go."

The yuan-ti straightened her back as she considered the argument. "You make a compelling point."

"It's something to think about anyway," Mythram noted.

"Another thing to think about is that our encounter with those Dragon Cultists apparently isn't that unusual," Ravyn commented. "Rumors about them are pretty much everywhere. Seeing a person in a dragon mask heading off somewhere."

"Oh, yes, the Order has a Marcheon assigned specifically to collating reports on dragon cultist activity," Caress added. "There was one, known as The White that has a fairly significant bounty on him. I was told to keep an eye on it."

"I think that is definitely something we should be doing," Ravyn commented. "Did you get any information about the dragon cultists?"

"I mostly gave my information. Marcheon Bhaide was going to check with the Emerald Enclave about the matter to confirm the report."

"Well, the way you explained it before, the Cult of the Dragon is a group that targets young, impressionable dragons and convinces them to become dracoliches," Ravyn said. "But what I'm hearing is that these cultists are different somehow. They're not pushing the undeath thing."

"That is... concerning," Mythram commented.

"I... may have a contact I speak to," Caress suggested. "I'll look into it. As an aside, I also spoke to Whitehawk Elara, the leader of the local Order chapter..."

"Whitehawk...isn't that a median rank?" Ravyn asked. "This is a major city. Shouldn't the Neverwinter branch be commanded by someone of higher rank?"

"I am very new to this organization and the church of Sharess doesn't precisely have ranks," the yuan-ti noted. "Our hierarchy is far more...informal."

"Neverwinter has gone through a few upheavals of late, and the current Lord is... let's say shifty," Mythram commented. "It's possible the Order isn't as welcome as it used to be."

"Anyway, I spoke to her about Timmy's situation, she is aware of it and there is a standing order not to harass the apprentices of other allied factions," she explained. "But unless we have names and evidence, there's not much she can do but remind people of the rule. I plan to spread the word with my people as well."

"Your... oh, you mean Sharessans."

"So, we've got a few different leads to follow and we're making progress on Sad Larry's situation."

"Yes, and the cleaning company seemed quite excited about getting the poopers (heheheh) in working order," Lyra reported. "And according to Larry, if we get the repairs complete it won't just unrepair itself afterwards."

"All right then," Mythram said. "Let's go see what... do you hear shanties?"

"It does sound like it," Caress said, standing up and walking to the door in curiosity, the others starting to follow along behind the two.
